The Best Treatment for Low Back Pain is Acupuncture

without comments

The most common reasons for getting acupuncture treatment in Overland Park are for the relief of arthritis, joint pain, chronic pain, and most especially for lower back pain. Chinese medicine and acupuncture for a lot of people has been a really effective part of their treatment plan for the relief and management of pain. But how does it work? And will it work for you?

The Chinese Medicine Perspective of Pain

Joint and/or musculoskeletal pain, in Chinese medicine, corresponds to a set of symptom known as bi syndrome. Bi, in Chinese medicine terminology, means blockage or obstruction. The blockage can lead to painful symptoms such as hot, fixed, achy, or stabbing pain. Certain people suffering from bi syndrome may find relief with rest while others patients feel better when they exercise or move. A lot of disorders of the joint and musculoskeletal system are grouped into a sub-classification of bi syndrome. If a bi syndrome type of pain is diagnosed by the acupuncturist, treatment most probably would entail the proper selection of herbal remedies and acupuncture points to break down and quell the symptoms in the problematic part of the body.

How Acupuncture Treatment for Back Pain Works

Acupuncture works by deactivating and eliminating trigger points (parts of the body where there is inflammation and localized constriction). The acupuncture points to be needled are determined by the specific pattern of pain the patient exhibits.

The use of Chinese medicine and acupuncture facilitates healing in two ways:

1. First, they work to reduce pain by rectifying stagnation and local congestion and relieving inflammation.

2. After treating stagnation and congestion which normalizes local circulation, Chinese medicine and acupuncture help the body return to a more robust and mobile state by helping nourish the discs, tendons and, and muscular structure of the body.

Chinese Medicine practitioners believe that in aspects of the body that aren’t inflamed or constricted, certain muscles may be able to ‘project’ pain patterns in those areas. A qualified acupuncturist has the knowledge and skill to deactivate the trigger points as well as be able to identify these patterns. This professional can then determine what distal and nearby acupoints to needle to help remedy the pain. With this technique, the acupuncturist can stimulate the meridian system of the body in order to relieve local pain as well as resolve underlying imbalances in the flow of energy to treat the real cause of the back pain.

Research Validates Acupuncture as a Bona Fide Back Pain Treatment

The Archives of Internal Medicine published a recent study showing acupuncture’s capacity to alleviate back pain better than Western standard treatments. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) funded the study that involved 638 subjects all suffering from back pain. The subjects were grouped into four with one group receiving no acupuncture treatment but resumed whatever standard plan of treatment they were on, (physical therapy or drugs). Another group was treated with placebo acupuncture, a form of acupuncture in which the skin was never pieced but was nonetheless stimulated. The other two groups both received real acupuncture treatment.

Seven weeks later, the three groups that were treated with acupuncture (including the placebo group) showed more significant and greater improvement compared to the standard treatment group. Positive outcomes were even seen in placebo acupuncture treatment.

The surprising results of the placebo acupuncture group that almost equaled that of real acupuncture led to question as to what it is about the system that sets off recovery. The standard care group had a 39 percent rate of improvement while the three acupuncture groups, tallied an average rate of 60 percent.

What are the Advantages of Using Acupuncture for Low Back Pain?

An overwhelming majority of people (85 percent) will experience back pain at least once in their life. Back pain costs Americans around US $40 billion in health care. People who have been suffering from this potentially debilitating type of ailment for a long time know only too well the importance of getting a very effective and safe form of treatment for their condition. Acupuncture is cost-effective and a really safe choice for those seeking relief for their conditions.

Practically every qualified acupuncturist is a specialist in the treatment of chronic pain. They have spent hundreds of hours training with Chinese Medicine and acupuncture teachers to know how to relieve pain and treat patients over the long-term in the safest and best way possible. Countless numbers of people have found relief through Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. Of course, there are skeptics who are not convinced that acupuncture will work for them. However, there’s growing evidence that acupuncture can be an effective mode of treatment for relieving pain and acupuncturists can develop a long-term plan of treatment regimen to help patients live a happy, healthy, and pain-free life.
