Usually a health professional would use one or the other approach or a combination of both to treat an illness or a dysfunction.

Medical Acupuncture History

For many centuries, acupuncture has attracted the interest of many physicians outside Asia. In the 15th century, there is documented reference to acupuncture from a Dutch and Portuguese clerics and traders. The interest of many Western folk has continued from the past to the present. In 1972, President Nixon had a considerable interest to acupuncture after his vist to China when surgeons witnessed surgical operations were being carried out using acupuncture analgesia instead of anesthetics. This interest resulted to making traditional Chinese medicine a global phenomenon. This also resulted to a desire by many medical professionals to learn acupuncture without studying any difficult theory. They rejected some traditional Chinese medicine that included reference to philosophies of Taoist cosmology and to other Western philosophies that bordered on mysticism and shamanism.

Most practitioners in the United Kingdom are medicinal acupuncturists either allied health professionals or medical doctors. Training for health professionals and medical doctors is provided by the British Medical Acupuncture Society. A lot of countries have similar organizations and an organization that represents medical acupuncturist in over 80 countries is the International Council of Medical Acupuncturists or ICMART.

The term acupuncture is a Western term derived from a Latin that means puncturing with needles. The term was first used by the Dutchman Wilhelm Ten Rijn who wrote a monograph about acupuncture titled De Acupuntura at the end of the 17th century. Europe was influenced with traditional Chinese medicine through the exchange of the Silk Road trade routes. It was through this way that an exchange in goods and ideas happened.

Western Medical Acupuncture defines Jacksonville acupuncture as a therapeutic modality that involves the insertion of fine needles. It is the adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using the current knowledge of pathology, physiology and anatomy and the principles of evidence based medicine. Although western acupuncture has evolved from Chinese acupuncture, many practitioners do not stick to the concepts of yin and yang and the circulation of gi. They regard acupuncture as a part of conventional medicine rather than a complete alternative medical system. Western practitioners such as doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists developed medical acupuncture as a technique that could be incorporated into their practice without necessarily believing or learning ancient Chinese medical background.
