Allergy Symptoms

without comments

Different people are allergic to different types of substances. Talk to your doctor if your allergy seems to be persistent or serious.

Food Allergies

The signs of food allergy often become manifest after taking foods you are allergic to. There are rare occasions when the person reacts to a food allergy only after hours of eating these foods. The symptoms can affect areas around the digestive tract, mouth or lips among others. Certain foods like wheat, shellfish, soy, fish, milk, nuts and eggs among others are the most common foods that result to allergic responses.

Mild Symptoms:

  • Itchy, stuffy or runny nose
  • Sneezing, wheezing, congestion or coughing
  • Skin rashes
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps and indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Swallowing or speaking difficulty
  • Feeling of tightness in your throat
  • Swelling, itching or tingling of your throat, lips, tongue or mouth

Serious Symptoms:

  • Anaphylaxis – This is a sudden, severe and potentially fatal physiological response with symptoms that affect many parts of the body. Anaphylaxis can manifest immediately after exposure to allergens. This reaction can result in the entire swelling of the body, hardness of breathing and serious itching of the whole body. It can result in shock and death and needs to be given medical attention as soon as possible. This allergic response can be due to food allergies, insect bite or sting or from medication.
  • Sudden and serious facial swelling and itching
  • Sudden hoarseness or incapacity to speak
  • Sudden or rapid increase of heart beat
  • Faintness, dizziness and sweating
  • Breathing difficulties

Other symptoms of anaphylaxis include:

  • Irregular heart beat
  • Diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting or nausea
  • Lightheadedness, confusion or agitation
  • Chest tightening
  • Swallowing or breathing difficulty
  • Swelling in the throat or mouth
  • Tingling or itching all over the body

Anaphylaxis also causes your bronchial tissues to swell up causing you to choke and making you lose consciousness. It also causes your blood pressure to drop dramatically due to many of your blood vessels dilating all at once and it may also lead to loss of consciousness. The shock caused by anaphylaxis can lead to death.

Respiratory Allergies

Respiratory allergy reactions often manifest some hours after exposure. They are usually caused by allergens such as dust mites, mold spores, plant pollens and animal dander.

Mild Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Sore eyes
  • Clear and thin mucus and runny or clogged nose
  • Watery, swollen, itchy or red eyes
  • Congestion
  • Throat hoarseness
  • Impaired sense of smell
  • Postnasal drip
  • Itchy nose or throat
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing or wheezing

Serious Symptoms:

  • Chest pain and tightness
  • Difficulty and shortness in breathing

Contact Allergies

Symptoms of contact allergies manifest themselves after a few minutes of exposure, although there might be individuals that show symptoms only after several hours later. Typical allergens include cosmetics like hair dye and perfume, medications, fragrances, preservatives, latex, nickel, rubber, poison oak and poison ivy among many others. A person can also get allergy from metal clips, zippers, hairpins, jewelry and buttons – all products that are made from nickel. Even periods under the sun can give you allergic reactions.

Mild Symptoms:

  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Redness or swelling of the skin
  • Fluid filled bumps on the skin

Serious Symptoms:

  • Anaphylaxis

Insect Bite or Sting Allergies

A sting or bite from an insect can contain poison that can cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms often become manifest after a few minutes after a bite or a sting although some people might have a more delayed reaction with symptoms showing up only after some hours. The allergic reactions can come from bites or stings of yellow jackets, fire ants, hornets, bees or wasps.
