What To Expect When Trying Out Acupuncture for The First Time

without comments

If you have just decided to try out acupuncture for the first time and have never visited an acupuncture clinic before, then your mind may be loaded with a lot of questions. You probably are wondering if the process is painful when a number of needles are stuck into your skin or how the process exactly works. So, it’s important to know what to expect so as not to panic when you’re undergoing an acupuncture procedure.

A typical acupuncture treatment basically involves insertion and maneuvering of a few to several reed-thin needles into your skin. The amount of needles to be used during treatment, the specific points of insertion, and the depth of the insertion will vary and will be based on your condition that your acupuncturist will initially evaluate. There is no scientific basis to the benefits of using acupuncture but there are tons of testimonies and anecdotal evidence that it truly and effectively works.

A typical acupuncture treatment may involve one to two sessions a week for one to three months. Before the actual procedure, your acupuncturist will evaluate your present health condition first. He or she will review your lifestyle and medical history then perform some Chinese diagnostic examinations on you to diagnose your condition and come up with a plan of treatment based on the results of your examination. Then, your acupuncturist will commence with the treatment itself and insert one or x number of needles into specific points on your skin.

The treatment takes an hour or less depending on the gravity of your condition. Each acupuncturist has his own style of treatment but the goals are always the same: to promote normal body functions, eliminate stress, and purge pain and ailments in your body. You will be told to either sit or lie down depending on where the needles will be inserted. To prevent infection, your acupuncturist only uses disposable sterile needles in the treatment.

Initially, a needle will evoke a short prickly sensation right after it is inserted. Most patients report of feeling no pain during the entire procedure. You may experience an achy feeling as each needle is stuck at the right depth. To help the patient relax and avoid stress, most acupuncturists advertise acupuncture in Pembroke Pines as a pain-free method.

Unfortunately, sometimes, pain cannot be avoided during treatment and when the patient is unable to bear the pain anymore, the acupuncturist stops the treatment to be continued at the next session. The treatment can generate dull or tickly pains, coolness, and heat. At the end of the session, most patients report a feeling of ecstasy or a feeling of profound tranquility.
