Acupuncture Can Lead to the Relief of Sore Throat Pain

without comments

With the fall season being only a few months away, the weather will be soon cooling off; people’s throats however will be heating up. People of all ages will again experience a rise in pharyngitis, more commonly known as sore throat all through fall and winter. Fortunately, acupuncture is there to help.

When the pharynx becomes inflamed sore throat or pharyngitis occurs. The two most common reasons for pharyngitis are bacteria and viruses despite the fact that this condition can be caused by a number of factors including, for example, allergies, mouth breathing, and smoking. The germs can be widely spread once school resumes in the fall and it can extend beyond the classroom as students gather to parties, dances, and football games – frequently resulting in a rise of people suffering from strep throat, tonsillitis, the cold, and even mononucleosis (mono).

These conditions, of course, are also experienced by adults although cases of mononucleosis usually occur in teens between the ages of 15 to 17. At these ages, teens often date each other and mono can be transmitted through mucus and saliva giving it the monicker “the kissing disease”. However, the fact is that mono and other factors that contribute to pharyngitis are not only caused by the transmission of saliva through kissing, it can also be passed on by being close to a person with the disease when he or she sneezes or coughs or via seemingly harmless ways as sharing a straw.

One of the hardest aspects of sore throat is that many sufferers usually don’t exhibit any symptoms. This means that they are not aware of the threat they pose to others and so they are unable to warn others of the risks involved when coming in close contact with them. What’s worse mono has a long incubation period of 30 to 50 days meaning that the symptoms one is just beginning to notice can be due to an elevator ride with someone who had been carrying the disease more than a month ago.

Because these microbes are almost impossible to avoid, there’s a very high possibility that you will experience a sore throat at least once in your lifetime. And since sore throat has symptoms that are quite uncomfortable you would want relief from them as fast as possible.

What then is the solution?

First, we should note that people who have problems swallowing or suffering from high fevers, or have symptoms that persist for several days require medical attention. But for people who are experiencing a scratchy, dry, stand-alone sore throat, they usually address the problem by buying over-the-shelf drugs and tough it out. Unfortunately, many of them are not aware that there is a simpler speedy alternative in the form of acupuncture treatment along with lots of fluids and rest.

An article published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, reviewed a 2012 involving 74 patients with severe sore throat. The study revealed that within one minute of balance acupuncture treatment, patients experienced a significant reduction in their sore throat pain.

How does acupuncture in Bellingham treat sore throat pain?

According to TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, the vital energy or life energy of each person moves like blood via several energy channels called meridians to each organ of the body. A disruption in the flow in any of these meridians will lead to pain and/or illness.

Addressing the affected meridian points is the key to restoring the channels; each meridian point has a different function. So, when sore throat develops in a person, a qualified licensed practitioner will need to stimulate multiple meridian points to silence the cough associated with the sore throat (remove phlegm), treat the scratchy dry feeling (increase moisture), resolve the inflammation (expel heat), and strengthen the person’s immune system.

In TCM, the cause of sore throat can be different for each patient despite the fact that people may experience common symptoms. To know the underlying cause of your sore throat your acupuncturist will need to spend some time asking you questions about your health and medical history. This can help the practitioner identify patterns that in turn will determine what meridian points to treat. Therefore, a couple of patients both with sore throat can have different acupuncture treatments.

To conclude, when you plan to go out in public this coming fall, please take the necessary precautions. Contact your nearest licensed acupuncturist clinic if you think you might be going down with pharyngitis/throat. Make an appointment to give your immune system a boost and relieve your sore throat.
