For one out of ten people including children, depression is a serious illness that they have to cope occasionally or regularly. This mental condition can potentially affect anyone. Oftentimes, we may not be aware that we’re suffering from depression, but if it is not addressed after a while, it can significantly impact our everyday life.

Depression can manifest certain common signs and some of these signs you can identify and some may be difficult to deal with. If you have the following problems, you may be more or less suffering from depression.

1. Having a feeling that nothing will get better or a feeling of hopelessness or helplessness.

2. Sleeping too much, sleeplessness, or experiencing sleeping difficulties.

3. Difficulty remembering things, making decisions, or concentrating.

4. Major weight gain or loss, eating too little or too much.

5. Being bad-tempered and irritable than usual.

6. Loss of interest in activities that are easy to accomplish and before were considered very interesting for the person.

7. Stomach pain, back pain, headaches, and other types of physical pain.

8. Feeling of heaviness, sluggishness, fatigue, lack of energy.

10. The person strongly criticizes himself. Sees life as meaningless and not worth living, has suicidal ideations.

Aside for professional help, depression can be relieved or treated by applying pressure to two acupuncture points: the Liver 3 (taichong) point and the Pericardium 6 (neiguan) points.

The liver 3 point is responsible for regulating the emotions, clearing the mind, relieving irritability, and for the health of the liver.

The pericardium point is found on the inner side of the arms on their center lines, 3 cun from the lines of the wrist. They control psychological wellbeing, normalization of the mind, and the health of the heart.

Massage and apply acupressure on both sides of these two points everyday for 5 – 10 minutes or whenever you need to uplift your mood and reenergize your mind and body with energy. The health benefits are even greater if before going to bed at night, you get a hot water foot bath and afterwards massage the liver 3 point.

In addition, you can also use the acupoint Cv 17 or tanshong point to uplift your mood. This point is associated with the conception meridian and is found between the centers of the breasts. It provides energy to the heart and builds up chest energy. It is intimately tied to our emotions. Applying acupressure on this point will give you peaceful feelings and calm you down whenever you feel angry, upset, or sad.

Each day for two or three minutes, with 4 fingers closed, rub the Cv 17 point downwardly and in a clock wise manner. Administering acupressure to this point can help relieve or cure rapid heartbeat, congested chest, cough, or asthma. For women, it can improve the health of their breast.

Lastly, to avoid depression you need to have a positive outlook towards life. Be more forgiving and tolerant, participate in meaningful activities listen, converse with cheerful people, listen to joyful and peaceful music, and let go of things you have no control of.

Before embarking on any health and therapy program, you need to always seek the advice of a doctor or healthcare provider.
